About Us
Project Purr BR exists to save as many of the cats and kittens at our city's pound (Companion Animal Alliance shelter; formerly EBR Animal Control) as possible. Prior to our existence, 90 percent of felines who entered the shelter died there. Project Purr BR is changing that and is leading Baton Rouge into a time when no kitten or cat is killed needlessly at our community's shelter..

Project Purr BR and other nonprofits are engaged the Baton Rouge No Kill Initiative, in which adopting, fostering, and spaying/neutering become the priority at the Companion Animal Alliance (CAA) shelter, formerly East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control Center. A No Kill Community is one in which no healthy, treatable, or rehabilitatible dog or cat is put down. Achieving No Kill is a process which is dependent on multiple programs, including rescue organizations such as Project Purr BR. Success is achieved through strong community involvement. We in Project Purr BR rescue cats and kittens who are at imminent risk of being put down at the CAA shelter, place in foster homes, provide comprehensive veterinary care including spay/neuter, and then adopt into loving homes. Given that each year, 25,000 Baton Rougeans will adopt a new pet, we reject the theory that there are too many pets, not enough adopters. We believe that with hard work and strong community support, no impounded cat or kitten should have to die because of lack of space. In the first year and a half of our existence we have rescued over 1,200 felines from being killed at the shelter, and they are being adopted into homes all over Louisiana and even other states throughout the USA.
All of this is made possible by our wonderful adopters, volunteers, board members, and donors! Thank you all!
